Important Information – New EU Payment Service Directive

The Payment Service Directive (PSD), formally known as the New Legal Framework for Payments was adopted by the European Parliament and the European Council in April 2007. All 30 countries of the European Economic Area (EEA), making up the Single Market in the EU, are required to implement the requirements of the PSD into their national legislation by 31 October 2009.

The aim of the EU’s new Payment Service Directive is to simplify and accelerate future payment transactions within the European Union. The creation of a Single Euro Payments Area will provide a Europe-wide aligned processing and settlement procedure for bank transfers, direct debits and card payments, resulting in faster and more cost-effective transactions. By way of ensuring this, the relevant national regulations and laws will be superseded by new EU legislation.
